Abstract

To see if a combination of chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) and ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) is effective and well tolerated. 32 patients with radiolucent gallstones were treated with a combination of CDCA and UDCA (10mg/kg/day) for 6 months.
Eleven had stones ¡Â5mm, 9 had stones >5 mm but¡Â10mm, twelve had stones>10mm. Patients with stones >10mm received oral dissolution therapy of gallstone fragments after extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy. The effects of treatment of stone
dissolution
evaluated by cholecystography and ultrasonography at 3 and 6 mo.
Complete dissolution of galistones occured in 9 pateitns (28%) and partial dissolution occured in 13 patietns (41%). In the patients with stones ¡Â5mm, rates of complete and partial dissolutions were higher than in the patietns with stones >5 mm
but¡Â10mm (74% vs. 55%). In patients with stones >10 mm after lithotripsy, total dissolution was 75%. There was a statistically significant different dissolution rate by size of gallstones. We concluded that CDCA plus UDCA dissolves radiolucent
stones
quickly, with a rare adverse effects and also after lithotripsy.
